Chair: James Sarria
James completed his undergraduate degree in Conservation & Resource Studies at UC Berkeley, where he immersed himself in agroecology, urban agricultural land conservation, and political movements in Latin America. He fell in love with field research in Mexico where he spent a summer studying forest fire ecology in the Sierra de San Pedro Mártir National Park. This experience led to being awarded a Minority Health International Research Training Fellowship to study ethnomedical botany during two summers in La Libertad & Loreto, Peru.
James is currently studying Sustainable Food Systems through Green Mountain College, perusing his Master of Science degree. Before this transition, James worked for eight years at the Level Playing Field Institute (LPFI) in Oakland, California. His most recent role was Director of Programs & Partnerships, where he supported Alumni of LPFI’s Summer Math and Science Honors Academy. James is founder of the Perucano Institute, where he is leading programming to disrupt student exchange programs, engaging students from the United States and Peru with the Agenda 2030 United Nations Sustainable Development goals. You can often find James at Dance Mission in San Francisco, California dancing afro-Brazilian.
